Citigroup is neutral between its 50-day and 200-day averages after failing near 140 and breaking below its 21- and 50-day; it recently bounced off the 200-day, closing near highs, encouraging ahead of earnings. A break above 134 would be positive and could retest August–September peaks; below 125 very negative.

However, if the XLF index, and certainly the major stocks we will show you such as JPMorgan and Citigroup, fail to maintain the 200-day level, it could tell us a lot about changing market conditions.

This chart belongs to Citigroup. Citigroup, for me, is a very good example of what many of these charts look like. These are stocks, and this is a sector that generally performed well before the summer, but as the summer progressed, and as we moved from August to September and now to October, we somewhat failed to reach new record levels.

We have now formed a more consistent resistance, and we have now begun to move downwards.

I think the chart for Citigroup in particular shows clear resistance at approximately the 140 level. This was after that initial downward wave at the end of June and the beginning of July, where the stock found some kind of support, then bounced back and reached 140 several times during a period of about 6 weeks , then we began to decline and move downwards.

Similar to the XLF fund, it is now actively testing the 200-day moving average , and since the middle of last week until now, we have actually bounced upwards. Interestingly, in the short term, in the last two days after testing the 200-day moving average, which was last Wednesday, we closed near the day's highs, on Thursday and Friday.

Today, we are also closing near today's highs. I would say that this is very encouraging ahead of the earnings announcement. If we can maintain this kind of sentiment in the short term, that is encouraging, meaning that traders, at least in the short term, are taking advantage of some temporary weakness and betting on some kind of recovery from here.

Citigroup in particular, and many banks, I would say, are in this predicament. It is in what we call a " suspended moving average" state. This is what happens when you have a very strong chart , where the 200-day moving average tends to rise for several months, which is what we see here.

But we have now broken below the 21-day exponential moving average, and we have also broken below the 50-day level, and we are now somewhat in between. Therefore, in my analysis, this graph is neutral by definition.

The upward outcome would be breaking the 50-day level, so I say that if Citigroup surpasses around 134, it will be a positive breakout that will get it out of this state of fluctuation, and perhaps return to test those peaks recorded in August and September.

On the downside, a break below 125 would break the 200-day level that it has held for a long time. Therefore , a break below the 200-day level would be a very negative technical outcome in my opinion.

Between the 50 and 200 day levels, the situation is neutral.

For me, this means the market is asking you to wait. This means the market is telling you to hold off for a bit. What I like to do in this situation is use the alerts feature on the stockcharts website.

Once this practical framework is in place, right? Above 134, the situation is very bullish. Below 125, the situation is very bearish. Let's set two price alerts. Stockcharts will monitor this chart for us and tell us which of these two things has happened.

I would say, "Citigroup is above 134," and I would call it "Yay, a Citigroup breakthrough." Also, I always like to specify these three types of notifications. Email, I have a rule in my Gmail account , so that any alerts from stockcharts go to a specific folder.

When I am ready, I can review them all and make sure that they are followed up. I receive a text message, and my phone lights up if the alert is activated. Then the site notification, where a great bar appears at the top of the stockcharts login page.

I like to select them all to make sure I don't miss a key alert like this. So , we have the stock above 134, wow, the price has broken through. Now, we want to create a second alert in case the price breaks below the minimum.

I'll call it "Boo, City Collapse". Again , I select all these notifications and then press save alert.

Now, what I did was analyze Citigroup when I had the time to do so . I have established a basic framework of sorts. I am somewhat neutral at the moment, but a break above the 134 level would be very positive.

Breaking the 125 level is considered extremely negative. I am not a fan of placing limit orders or stop- loss orders in such cases. For me, it's more about setting a price alert so I can review the chart again, then take a closer look at it and see what the technical configuration might tell me.

Therefore , I prefer to follow stock charts to track price movement. Now, I have these two alerts. I can move on to something else.

As for Citigroup , I would say it is very similar to many other charts such as JPMorgan and others. They were very strong earlier in 2026, and now they are all pulling back to test the 200- day moving average on a chart like this.

If the stock breaks out of its fluctuation around the moving average, I will take action. Otherwise, I will most likely wait patiently.

similar to what we did with Citigroup, I will set two different price alerts, one for a breakout and the other for a breakout. Let's wait and see which one will be activated.
