UAL missed adjusted EPS ($2.54 vs $2.57 expected) though revenue met expectations, up 17%; cost per seat mile rose 17.3% with fuel at $3.90 a gallon. Lower passenger seat miles suggest demand stagnation and guidance is below forecasts; fuel prices and a demand slowdown could hurt in coming months.

Okay, let's move away from the technology sector and look at United Airlines. There was a tension before the United result, wasn't there? Premium customer demand remained unwavering.
But the big question was about the fuel price of oil, right ? How unfavorable this could be for airlines , so let us know some of your observations on this matter.
The company reported revenue of $17.9 billion. This is 17 percent more than last year. This met market expectations , but we saw a shortfall in adjusted earnings per share, which stood at $2.54. The market was expecting around $2.57.
Now, capacity has increased by 1.3 percent compared to last year, and cost per seat mile has also increased by 17.3 percent. There you will see your fuel charges and fuel expenses.
Now, the average price per gallon was $3.90. Energy costs rose by $1.8 billion this quarter compared to last year. So, they are under some pressure.
Diane, they failed to meet targets on another measure that has nothing to do with fuel. Originally, the number of passenger seat miles was slightly lower. So, they are clearly facing some headwinds in terms of fuel costs , but there is also some stagnation in terms of demand.
Perhaps the lack of demand is starting to reflect in their business, and so they are underestimating future expectations slightly below market forecasts.
However, we see that the share price has fallen by only 0.5 percent in pre-market trading, which currently stands at 0.4 percent. So, it has been able to turn around a bit here.
But again, fuel prices will affect them and if they see a slowdown in consumer demand, that could be a problem for them in the coming months , and I think that's why we saw the initial price shock.
